I was able to screen "A Real Pain" at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. This film stars and is directed by Jesse Eisenberg. It's also loosely based on his family's history in Southeastern Poland. Culkin and Eisenberg play cousins in the film who head to Poland to do a tour of their family history in honor of their grandmother. They reunite to go on this trip together, not really understanding what they both need from each other.
The movie is both exasperating and touching, with a story that viewers can easily connect to. The cousins have contrasting personalities, which adds authenticity to their on-screen relationship. The actors have a genuine chemistry that makes their interactions highly convincing. Culkin's performance stands out in almost every scene he appears in, demonstrating his versatility beyond his role in a popular TV series.
Eisenburg aimed to present Poland from a tourist's perspective, encouraging viewers to see the country beyond preconceived notions and stereotypes. He effectively captures the stunning landscapes of both nature and urban areas. While the cousins navigate their personal emotions and conflicts, they are enveloped by Poland's beauty. Eisenburg skillfully complements their journey with a strong supporting cast among the fellow tour vacationers.
